Randi Rhodes to end show

http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/88413/randi-rhodes-to-end-syndicated-show/

>A brief statement from Premiere Radio Networks claimed “Randi Rhodes has decided to end her national radio program. We’ve had a successful partnership with Randi for several years, and we wish her all the best for the future. Premiere Networks will conclude syndication and production of Randi Rhodes on May 16, 2014.”

We all know where to go for industry news. I thought the board was for posting commentary about the news.

No thoughts on the story you posted?

Sounds like Bain Channel has decided they don't have to worry about the fairness doctrine being restored and therefore don't need to make even the pretense of offering progressive talk programming.

Might you consider the possibility that liberal talk radio, especially Ms. Rhodes, couldn't attract enough listeners and/or advertisers? In music format forums in here, any suggestion that stations play anything other than the "hits" is met with scorn and derision. Why should news/talk be any different?

I'm curious if she'll still do something on the air...maybe still do a local talk show for WJNO West Palm Beach where she started.

They were down to less than 30 affiliates, which is likely well below the tipping point for a syndicated show of any kind...

Syndicators were never under the pressures of the Fairness Doctrine, and that device went away decades ago. It's just market forces at work.

Here, finally, we agree.

For the syndicator, it's about audience delivery and market delivery. A show must deliver an attractive audience size as well as enough markets for a national advertiser to find value in using the show.

For the station, it is about accepting a product that they can sell locally to local advertisers using the inventory that the syndicator leaves for such a purpose after taking their number of minutes an hour out of the total break time.

However, the pressures on delivery and saleability are just as strong for conservatives as liberals. The biggest problem that shows like Limbaugh have today is the dictate by many advertisers not to buy in that kind of environment. But that's a separate issue from the fact that ad rates are set by audience delivery and networks have to cover "enough" markets to give the appearance of being national.

Unfortunately Progressive Talk lost several key outlets on January 1 in three of the four top markets. Gone are WWRL New York (now Regional Mexican), KTLK Los Angeles (now Conservative Talk KEIB) and KNEW San Francisco (now also Conservative Talk). Last year, Progressive Talk stations in Boston, Seattle and Portland were lost, all becoming Sports stations.

No one has mentioned that last fall, Rhodes was saying she hadn't come to an agreement for a new contract with Premiere, an arm of Clear Channel, and her show would be ending at the end of 2013. Then a few weeks later, Premiere announced it HAD come up with a new one-year contract for Rhodes. But that was before the loss of the NYC, LA and SF affiliates.

Rhodes also is in the bad position of not being carried by SiriusXM's Progressive Talk channel. All three hours of Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann and Mike Malloy get carried on SiriusXM. One hour of Stephanie Miller is also heard on SiriusXM. But Rhodes has no such deal. Of course, there are other syndicated Progressive Talk shows that are carrying on, despite the defection of affiliates and no deal with SiriusXM: Alan Colmes (syndicated by Fox), Leslie Marshall, Bill Press, Norman Goldman. But I wonder how they're fairing with no satellite radio listeners or money.

I never thought you would buy into the wing-nuts and their lies. Funny things is when the righties don't like it, it's bias. When they do like it, it's market forces.

When ratings based decisions are made, it is market forces. The show had low numbers and too few clearances, and had lost three of the top 5 markets 4 months ago.

Your absolutely valid point will fall on deaf ears, you know. Every time a liberal host fails, not only does an angel get his wings, but a new conspiracy theory is born.

The day we _really_ will have the Fairness Doctrine is the day when conservative options land on NPR (and in a fairly equal amount). NPR was where the Left turned for talk shows, not Air America; powerful FM stations (WGBH and WBUR in Boston for example).

Agreed

Ha, Bain again. That eeevil Romney had so much power, no wonder he beat Obama in a landslide (/ sarcasm)

Ha!
"You're listening to Air America...you know I really hate big corporations like WalMart...and Big Oil, an' stuff like that! Well, let's take a break...we'll be right back after this...er...public service announcement.."
