What's Curtis Media up to now?

Okay, something's up with the Curtis Media stable of stations around here. While flipping through stations this morning, when I got to 96.9, instead of Steve Harvey, I heard La Ley (96.9 was La Ley's old home before they moved to the former WZTK). Wondering if CMG had pulled a switcheroo like CC-GSO did in January with Kiss (now on 100.3) and The Buzz (now on 105.7), I then checked 101.1, whose 100kW signal normally covers both the Greensboro and Raleigh markets, and heard nothing but static, while 96.9, which usually is a rimshot signal, came in as clearly as 101.1 usually does. And, on 96.9, La Ley was still calling themselves La Ley 101.1. ?????????

101.1 WZTK is off the air due to the Ice Storm in the Triad last week, they had damage to their tower and equipment, but is expected back on the air soon with them simulcasting 96.9.

This is on the La Ley web site. Using Google Translate from Spanish to English. "Last Thursday, the downtown area and Piedmont of North Carolina experienced an ice storm and wind without precedent, which left without electricity for more than 400,000 people. The Law WYMY 101.1FM suffered the interruption of its land to Friday 3am transmission, due to the massive accumulation of ice on the tower and antenna transmission. Our engineers quickly took on the task of resolving the situation, however, the storm caused extreme damage. It is for this reason that the Act has been 101.1FM without the possibility of transmitting. Work continues on a solution to this serious problem. The Act WYMY 101.1 FM, is a source of information and support for the fastest growing population in North Carolina
and for that reason Curtis Media Group reports that at this time you can hear LAW via our 96.9FM frequency and may also soon be tuned through the frequency is already known 101.1FM."

Hmmm... I was wondering if they would bring back the WWMY calls on 96.9 should the 101.1/96.9 simulcast indeed stay in place, but it appears there's a LPFM (150 watts) radio station in Beech Mountain, NC known as WWMY 102.3, simulcasting High Country 106.1. The parent company is listed as High Country Adventures, LLC, but the address is that of the Raleigh studios of CMG. Hmmm...?????

I didn't realize CMG had moved the WWMY calls to another of their stations. 102.3/Beech Mountain is actually not an LPFM but a class A FM, albeit with the 150-watt power likely to compensate for a mountain top antenna in that area. This was WECR-FM for many years. Their new calls are a good match for simulcast partner, WMMY/ 106.1 in Jefferson, NC, although those date to a previous ownership and branding.

Ok, so 101.1 is back on the air, and La Ley is now known as "La Ley 101.1 y 96.9." But here's another idea, now that "the New 96.9" is gone: When the sale of WKIX 102.9 (to CMG from McClatchey) closes, and WWPL, the 102.3 half of Pulse 102, is shifted to Curtis's daughter, shift the Kix format currently on 102.9 to 96.9 while 102.9 takes over the 102.3 half of the Pulse simulcast (when 102.3 changes hands, it is expected to flip to a country format). Not sure about call signs, since CMG's old WKXU calls were picked up by a LPFM somewhere in Mississippi (maybe resurrect the old "Katie Country" on 102.3 and keep the Kix calls with the current 102.9 format? WKTC is listed as available...)

So 101.1 apparently switched formats a few times since the ice storm, too, LOL!

As Far I Know La Ley will return to 101.1. The Pulse will Move to 96.9.

Why move Pulse to 96.9? A 102.9/102.5 pairing would make more sense, then move Kix to 96.9 (96.9 was a simulcast partner of the old "Star 102.9" before breaking away to launch La Ley in 2003) and leave La Ley on 101.1, where they would continue to cover both RDU and GSO. C'mon, Curtis, don't be another Cheap Channel...

Good point!!

96.9 is a better signal than 102.9, especially with 102.5 for the west side of the market. Pulse has decent ratings (18-34) without good coverage. Pulse on 96.9 has a lot of potential.

As 8 PM tonight night 101.1 back on full power!

"The way you listen to the New Pulse 102 is about to change...."
Is The New Pulse 102 going to be the New Pulse 101/102, 96.9/102.5, 96.9/102.3, 102.5/102.9/102.3???

As of 12:04 PM The Pulse is now on 96.9

The New Pulse FM

One question, now that Pulse has moved from 102.3 to 96.9 (although, for now, the Pulse is still simulcasting on 102.3 until its official format change takes place, much like they did on 101.1 when WZTK died before the official flip to La Ley): Will the WWPL calls also move to 96.9 to replace the now-defunct WBZJ calls that went with "The New 96.9" that was ultimately killed by Foxy? Right now, since the change is still relatively new, Wikipedia still shows WBZJ as simulcasing La Ley 101.1.

It shouldn't. I checked.
