Report: WGN could lose Cubs after 2014

They've been a staple on WGN-TV (local and superstation) going back to 1948. Now, the Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Chicago Cubs have exercised an option to end the current deal after the 2014 season unless the station pays higher rights fees. If they agree, the contract would terminate in 2019, three years early.

Can't imagine WGN without the Cubs, or can you? But, is the luster of having the Cubs fading? Does Tribune have enough in the bank after emerging from bankruptcy?

Discuss.

Perhaps WGN-TV and the Cubs can still salvage their relationship, probably with more of a reduction of telecasts but with for more money. Channel 9 was paying the Cubs around $20 million a year during this past contract, and another $40 million a year in cable rights from CSN Chicago...after seeing what the Dodgers recently got for their new TV deal with Time Warner Cable, and what Fox Sports is currently paying the Angels and Rangers yearly, you could understand why the Cubs want a bigger rights deal.

I think, probably like a lot of other folks, that WGN-TV losing the Cubs could have an adverse effect on WGN America. We all pretty much know that Cubs telecasts are WGN-A's biggest ratings draw, and with all due respect to the Bulls and White Sox, the Cubbies made the superstation what it is today. Each passing year, WGN-A is drifting more and more away from its Chicago counterpart...and if they do indeed lose the Cubs, they may as well scrap everything left on the channel that's Chicago-centric--the newscasts, Bulls, and the Pale Hose, and certainly completely re-brand the channel. I know Tribune has plans to add more exclusive and original programming to WGN America, and losing the Cubs may futher acclerate those plans.

Before our family moved permanently to Los Angeles near the end of the 80s, I grew up in Rockford, so we got a lot of Cubs telecasts locally (for years on WTVO, and later the telecasts moved to WIFR starting in '88) and on WGN over-the-air...fuzzy signal and all. It was one of the ways my grandmother and I bonded, watching games with Harry and Steve and hoping the Cubbies can win more often than they lost. I don't watch as many Cubs telecasts as I used to, and I don't have an actual favorite team (even living in Dodger Country), but I do follow baseball quite a bit.

Sadly, everything must come to an end...nobody can imagine WGN Television and the Cubs parting ways, but it can happen and life does go on...

WGN without the Cubs? Not possible. That's about the ONLY thing left from the "independent, classic" WGN. Other than that it's a cookie-cutter CW station which is very sad. No 8:00 movies anymore, and no Bozo...

The end of Cubs games on WGN America would be the absolute end, barring a rules change somewhere down the line. As it stands now, if WGN loses Cubs games and then were to pick them up again in the future, those games could not go on WGN America. It's basically why the Blackhawks are restricted to the local feed.
I think the Cubs will stay on WGN through at least 2019, albeit with a reduced schedule between 2015-19.

Cubs, WLS-Ch. 7 Near Deal For 25 Games Through 2019

Earlier Thursday, I posted here about the Cubs getting close to a deal with WGN-TV to air approximately 45 games beginning in 2015.

There was some question about whether WGN-TV or another broadcast outlet in the market would pick up the remaining games that had been on WGN's schedule through 2014. Now, Robert Channick reports in the Tribune about a completely unexpected over-the-air broadcast partner:

In a surprise move, the Cubs are about to strike a deal with WLS-Ch.7 to broadcast a portion of the team's schedule through 2019.

The ABC-owned station is expected to carry 25 games per season beginning in April. The station would have its pick of games, which would air in primetime, daytime and weekends. The deal is expected to be finalized within days, according to sources.

At no time was ABC-7 ever mentioned as a possible outlet for Cubs games and it's exceedingly rare in this day and age for a network-owned TV station to air local sports of any kind.

Trib says its a five year deal. It would "sync up the Cubs' TV and cable rights, allowing the team to pursue its own regional sports network beginning in 2020." So they still want that to be a thing.

Not surprisingly, these games will not be airing on WGN America.
