Talk Radio Large Market Scoreboard for September 2013

WSB Atlanta was flying high in September. It finished at #1, a big contrast with other large market Talk stations which continue to struggle. The only other large market Talk outlets finishing in the top 10 were WGN Chicago and KTRH Houston. WBAP Dallas came close, finishing at #11. And in Market #11, WJR Detroit finished in a tie for tenth place. Note that KFI Los Angeles, often a top 5 station in Los Angeles, fell a bit further to #13, after being #11in July and August.

1. New York...WABC (Cumulus) #16...WOR (Clear Channel) #23
2. Los Angeles...KFI (Clear Channel) #13 tie...KABC (Cumulus) #36
3. Chicago...WGN (Tribune) #7...WLS (Cumulus) #20 tie
4. San Francisco...KSFO (Cumulus) #16...KKSF (Clear Channel) #24 tie
5. Dallas...WBAP-AM-FM (Cumulus) #11 tie
6. Houston...KRTH (Clear Channel) #8 tie
7. Washington...WMAL-AM-FM (Cumulus) #13
8. Philadelphia...WPHT (CBS) #18 tie...*WWIQ(FM) (Merlin) 20...WKXW(FM) (Townsquare) #25 tie
9. Atlanta...WSB/WSBB(FM) (Cox) #1
10. Boston...WRKO (Entecom) #15

I only include commercial Talk stations that scored at least a one rating, except for heritage Talk outlet KABC. *WWIQ Philadelphia is being sold to religious broadcaster EMF.

A bit of a dropoff from last year is to be expected since the election was driving ratings then. The comings months will be interesting as the impact of the Hannity shift from several Cumulus stations impacts ratings one way or the other.

What explains WSB's 8.0? The lineup is similar to other news/talkers around the country -- Rush/Hannity, local AM/PM drive. They do have a good local news presence. Is it that there's no real news/talk competition in Atlanta?

KOA Denver and KMOX St. Louis are also often #1, among larger markets.

Even though WSB runs several national shows (Rush, Hannity, Andy Dean), they still have several local programs, Herman Cain, Clark Howard and Adam Goldfein. Cain and Howard are syndicated to other stations but I think most Atlanta listeners know they're based at WSB. And the station does have a large news department.

Yet being local hasn't stopped a lot of Talk stations from struggling. So what is WSB doing, especially being in a Sunbelt market, that keeps them on top?

Actually Clark Howard is no longer syndicated by WSB and is only carried by the station four nights a week.
