Mic Adapter Question For iphone 4

We have a Tieline Report-it but sometimes the 3G is spotty and can’t be used. My question is – can the external mic be used during a regular cell phone call when 3G is not available? At least the broadcaster could use a hand held mic instead of having to hold a cell phone during a ball game for example. Or – is there another mic adapter unit with xlr connectors available that would work with a iphone 4? I tried making a regular cell phone call with the Report-It using the external mic – but it only works when 3 G is available.

There are mic adaptors with XLR connectors available for the iPhone. There was an article in (I believe) Radio World that gave instructions for building such a cable.

The other way to use an IPhone or other Bluetooth equipped phone in 'old fashioned cellular mode' is to
dock with the JK Audio Daptor 3- http://www.jkaudio.com/daptor3.htm

This little unit has balanced XLR and unbalanced 1/8" Line Inputs and Outputs. I use this with an small
mixer and the results are good. (Granted it is a phone quality connection)

We keep one of these handy just in case all else fails.

Experimenting with older cell phones, I've found that you may need a mike with relatively high output. For example-- an EV 635 worked well, but an RE-16 would drop out--not enough level for the gated compressor in the phone.

We have had similar problems here with the tieline. We found that a ALM 601006 xlr IPhone mic adapter with audio outputs (available at amazon) works with our stuff and we can either plug in our Sennheiser HMD280 headset or just a plain shure SM58 and cans into it with pretty decent results.
