    GOODBYE RADIO KELKBOOM THE FIRST RADIO STATION OF ARUBA

    On Sunday June 16th 2013 was a sad moment in radio braodcasting of Aruba when at 11:59 pm just one minute before midnight after the National Anthem of Aruba did played the FM transmitter of Radio Kelkboom was turned off, and the daily broadcasts of Radio Kelkboom did reach to an end.
    Radio Kelkboom the oldest radio station on Aruba, did say goodbye to the airwaves of Aruba after 59 years brodcasting, and went in history as the first established radio station on the island that started brodcasting on March 20th 1954 on the AM band of 1435 KHz and moved later to 1440 KHz and in the 80's started also broadcasting on FM on 106.7 MHz and later kept broadcasting only on FM.
    Radio Kelkboom was very well known to be a family operated radio station, operated by the Kelkboom family, and the radio station offered a variety of musical programs including cultural music from Aruba, and was also very known by it's local newscasts in Papiamento and Dutch, as well as newscasts in Dutch, English, and Spanish via satelite from Radio Nederland Wereld Omroep (RNW) and Voice of Amercia (VOA)
    On the last day of the radio station, there was a last broadcast of the longest running cultural radio program broadcasted on Radio Kelkboom ' Butishi di Alegria' presented by the same team that kept the show for 40 years on the air and a lot of people visted the station to to thank the owners and radio station staff for their outstanding service to the community of Aruba during all the years that the radio station was on the air.

    Any reason why they're closing shop?

    About two or three years ago, I was listening to R. Kelkboom via TuneIn Radio. The musical format was interesting--Country Western tunes mixed in with Latin pop....
