Fidelity a Hot AC?

Seriously, they're playing a bunch of songs that seem a bit weird for the AC format. We talk about some AC's playing Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas (which Estereotempo wouldn't touch), but these guys have even started playing We No Speak Americano. Since when is that an AC song?

This makes them look more like a KQ or Toca de To' than Estereotempo, with the hardcore urban cut out. They most definitely crank out new music quicker. So is Estereotempo what Americans would call AC, compared to Fidelity which would be a Hot AC? And what would that make the old WIAC?

Estereotempo is gold-based AC, using the English language mainland US terms. Since hot AC's are often CHR's without the hip hop, Fidelity is certainly within the definition for that format. The old WIAC FM, irrespective of the format it thought it had, was just unfocused. At times it was too broad, other times just so filled with stiffs, but always a bit less palatable than the other options.

Now that I remember... the old WIAC had a lot in common with KLVE in Los Angeles... namely the names of shows like "Las Inolvidables al Mediodía" and "Estrellas en Concierto".

The parallels between Estereotempo and traditional AC's are noticeable... a traditional AC would play stuff like Barry Manilow, Michael Bolton and Barbra Streisand. Estereotempo has José José, José Feliciano and Yolandita Monge. And this is also the stuff that KLVE and Sistema would play at noon.

Sistema looked really weak right before the transition to Toca de To, though. Endless plugs for fradulent vacation packages, a dance block on Saturdays, and a morning show that was changing the cast very often... it couldn't last much longer.

However, Fidelity is a very good station. It not only has a good music mix, but one of the funniest morning shows in the island. It's amazing that Raymond Arrieta and Luisa de los Ríos, two radio hosts known for their bawdy humor on other stations could make such a hilarious show without being off-color. Not to take anything away from Otto Oppenheimer and Tita Guerrero in the afternoons, but the morning show is truly great.

And while her kind of show might not be my favorite, it wouldn't be unfair to call Laura Rosado the Puerto Rican Delilah.

WIAC-FM was a ballad/pop station going back to the mid 70's. It would get a 1 share while the original ballad/pop station on the Island, 11-Q was getting 11 to 13 shares, even though it was AM.

The KLVE features are / were decades old. "Estrellas en concierto" was a feature originally acquired from ORC in México and it dates to the 80's as a syndicated feature. Of course, the major success of KLVE from 1995 on has made it quite often copied. Most copies don't share the success of the original.

A traditional AC, more often called "gold based AC" would not play Manilow. A standards or easy listening station is more likely to do that.

The pop/ballad stations in PR are perhaps similar to AC in texture, but the similarities are not full parallels. The original pop/ballad station (see below) did not call itself AC to avoid such comparisons, even though it spent 5 years as #1 in 18-49 women in Pulse and Strategy.

Estereotempo has José José, José Feliciano and Yolandita Monge. And this is also the stuff that KLVE and Sistema would play at noon.

KLVE did not play, except for "Feliz Navidad" José Feliciano in its last 15 years nor has it played Yolandita. KLVE's "inolvidables" show is much more Luis Miguel and Juan Gabriel, in fact.

Well, it lasted about 33 or 34 years in the format, which is not a common thing in Puerto Rico.

Perhaps a similar concept of appealing to women, but your need to give English language format labels to things that don't translate does not take into account that Laura is much more content / advice / experience oriented and Delilah is much more of a sweet n Low atmosphere thing.
