Looking for logo of WVOC Columbus, GA

When I was there from 1979 to the mid 80s, we were told by residents that we could be heard in places like Decatur, Snellville, and Lawrenceville. So I guess we traveled well to the East. I know we could hear our signal all of the way down to Panama City Beach, too. Of course, at that time, we did have the highest tower in the world. Yep, the World. Of course that record has fallen nowadays.

that tower was only the world's tallest for one year, from 1962 to 1963. WIMZ in Knoxville TN was built 3 feet taller the next year. Shortly following, also in 1963, KTHI-TV in Fargo went up at 2,063 and held the record for 10 years.

The 102.9 FM antenna wasn't at the top of the old tower, either but it was certainly way up there and the signal has always been amazing.

When we moved the station and scrapped the old tower in January 2014, it remained a full C and center of radiation ended up a hair higher (12 ft) than it was before, with 10 bays instead of 7. The new tower is about 15ft taller than the old one. Signal was heard with clarity in Panama City the day we turned it on, so it's as strong as it ever was. The glut of translators and such hamper the bonus coverage it used to get to the North, for sure.

Wow, didn't know all of that as the station, WVOC-FM was billing itself as having the highest tower when I was there. They even had fliers made up that the sales staff used when they were pitching companies for their CAs. Our chief engineer, Bill Thompson always stated that it was the highest tower, also.
