types of HOT AC?

regular Hot AC:

tons of 90s Matchbox 20, Goo Goo Dolls, etc. Current Green Day, Michelle Branch, etc. Maybe an 80s song here and there.

80s heavy Hot AC:

regular Hot AC with 80s mixed in. Lots of flashback shows on the weekends.

CHR leaning Hot AC AKA Adult CHR:

90s-Current Hot AC with some rhythmic hits/pop mixed in. The JRN format is a good example.

Rhythmic heavy Hot AC:

Hot AC with 70s-80s disco and other rhythmic tracks mixed in. Think WNEW from December 2003-Spring 2004 before they went full blown Rhythmic.

Modern AC:

Think WTMX Chicago.

Mainstream/Hot AC Blend:

Harder edged Mainstream ACs. Borderline Hot AC. Probably Delilah at night.

Rock AC:

Hot AC and Classic Rock mashed up together.

The Jones Hot AC format has a fair amount of 80s music in their mix, one or two tunes per hour, depending on the time of day. One of their main positioners of late is "The 80s, 90s and Now." Add to that an hour of all 80s weekdays at noon (ET) and another 5 hours Sunday nights. And another 5 hours of 80s-heavy programming Saturday nights, with some early 90s mixed in. I'd say that this would fit better in your "80s Heavy Hot AC category". Just the unsolicited opinions from someone who is quite familiar with this particular service. :)

You're right about Jones. It used to fit the category Jeremy placed it in, though. Adult Hit Radio (now Hot AC) went through a major revamp about 2 years ago to bring it back to a more true hot AC sound. Jones even sent out memos talking about the "format change." They used to be fairly contemporary (maybe with a stray 80s tune here and there) and not afraid to play top 40 rap tunes, especially during the time fill records at night. AHR was probably the closest satellite format to CHR in recent history. Now, they're just another run-of-the-mill hot AC.
