KFI ID nitpick

When did KFI's top-of-hour ID change? The woman that whispers "Los Angeles" appears to have changed, and "Orange County" is now added to the service market.

If they're going to do this, why doesn't WABC ID as "New York-Nassau-Suffolk"?

Orange County was added about a month ago. Nassau-Suffolk is measured by Arbitron as its own market. Advertising agencies aren't buying WABC based on that markets numbers. But Orange County is part of the Los Angeles Arbitron market. And MANY of KFI's core listeners have Orange County zips. It makes perfect sense to add it.

Nassau-Suffolk is an embedded market.

Just as Nassau-suffolk is part of the NY market.

We could make the same argument about the Inland Empire, which was formerly surveyed as Orange Cty, and it's Riverside/San Bernardino base. In the case of the Inland Empire, there are two local talk stations (KTIE and KCAA). Nassau-Suffolk, to the best of my knowledge, does not have local talk stations.

Re: KFI ID nitpick/Imaging

The OC ID is fine, but ...
Since Don Elliot left I've notcied the imaging and production values
at KFI sound about average. For years especially under David Hall
KFI had the most inventive and often humourous imaging. Now its
very monotone..with Mr Big voice having a problem even saying the
word "stimulating". Of course without Hendrie there isn't a lot
of laughs on the station.

Re: KFI ID nitpick/Imaging

A lot has changed since Cox dropped KFI (why did they do that?).

David G. Hall knows his audience, and that Marvin Collins engineer had the best Stereo AM broadcast around.

Then CCU cuts the stereo pilot and then hampers the AM band.

Here's to HDRadio .....<P ID="signature">______________

Where did Elliot go?

He was a kick to work with. Somehow he designated me the "Daily Cash Payoff" Winner Promo person. Even when I switched back to KPRZ overnights, he would leave that Days Winner for me to produce. I found it interesting as these Promos usually aired right after the Winner Won! I even made a Generic DCP that I heard 6 Months after the 102.7 & 1150 Simulcast/Shadowcast consumed my Job. The winner was yelling Nooooo, and Paul Freeman was yelling Yesssss, and that was the entire Promo. Best DCP story, the biggest payout of the Week, $5000, we were all in the Studio, and Big Ron asked the Winner, "What is your Favorite Radio Station", and the Caller aired live said "ah KMET", Moron.

Don Elliot is one of the industry's great production guys.
He left KFI back in 2001 or 2002. While there he did do
some of the imaging. At that time it was handled by several
people. One of them now does all the producing. His name is
Ray Avila and he's actually very good, but I'm guessing that
with the amount of production they throw at him he's gets
tired. He's done some great work over the years.
As for Don, he has his irons in a few fires and is quite successful.
He's good people! They both are!

Cox dropped KFI & KOST saying that they wanted to be the kings
of the small & medium market. It's been related that more than
one Cox executive regrets the trade to AM/FM (Now CC)
Hall gets a lot of credit, but he had lots of help.
Collins was a solid pro who could have benefited from a bigger
budget.

Re: KFI ID nitpick/Imaging

I disagree Hall deserves the credit. Robin B (the current PD)
is solid, but has benefited from what Hall put together. The
Sept 11th attacks, wars 1, and 2 have all helped KFI reap
the strongest ratings yet. What they have lost in my estimation
is humor and innovation. Plus they pre-record Handel bits and
insert them on a live show ...that's totally bush league in
my estimation. One more person who added hell of a lot of
course was Mark Dennis.

Hello radio people....

I would like to responced to and get the record straight about who was doing the imaging for KFI. I Have been doing the imaging for KFI the last 8 maybe it's 9 years. I find it insulting that Don Elliot gets credit for the sound and branding of this radio station that my imaging was a part of. For the sound to be above average is your opinion..... This station is a industry leader. Many talk stations across the country look to KFI as the Talk station to sound like. As for Don Elliot...and the imaging and production for KFI...Sir You know not what you speak of!

I think the difference (correct me if I'm wrong David) is that,
as a very right-leaning talk station, Orange County might
contribute more listeners to KFI's total than LA County does.

But in the NYC market, conservative listeners are pretty
spread out in all the suburbs... Long Island, New Jersey,
Westchester, Fairfield County. (And conservative listeners
are pretty much the target at WABC.)

Last time I checked, KZLA also IDed as "Los Angeles-Orange
County." I'm assuming the same is true... that more country
listeners can be found in Orange County than in LA County.

Of course, as former Congressman Bob Dornan found out to his
dismay, Orange County certainly isn't as white and conservative
as it once was.

They probably felt, after research, that OC listeners had greater potential and felt underserved. Note that KFI has increased OC temperature checks and traffic hotspots. However, the OC only has a small portion o fth etotal market population... so there is still far more potential in LA County.

Every station occasionally realizes that they mostly have studios far from OC, and they neglect that area. So they pay lip service for a while, and then it falls off.
