KIKK "CNN 650" will be running music on the weekends...looks like a revival of Ronnie Renfrow's show on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Former managers of the old KQUE and KRTS are involved. Sounds like a hipper approach to Standards, perhaps along the lines of WRDA "Red 104.1" in St. Louis. Article at:

I would like to know what the weekend listenership would be on 650 given the measly 250 watt signal. Any thoughts?

I think they should go with this format on a full time basis, instead of worrying about CNN. There is just too much competition here for them to try and compete with KTRH, KNTH, and others with better signals. KBME was pulling better ratings with Standards than they are with Sports. I'm not saying that they would pull the same numbers as KBME, but I think they'd do a little better than they would with CNN.

Too bad that Stern is leaving. He'd be the perfect fit with Standards. ;)<P ID="signature">______________

....btw, my wishes to all the minds behind this all the luck in the world....and while on the subject, if this format, by some chance were to go the route of the "big band" era, and if you (or anyone else) were to PD this proverbial "full time format", which route would you go?

1) satellite feed much like the one KBME was on until its demise for much of its time until it was discontinued for the new "sports" format?

2) a different type of satellite feed for a similar kind of format which was on KOLE 1340 through March 1995 (likely a different company from what KBME and KMVL was/is using.....)

or......

3) .....here I go!!!!! the "Stardust Memories" satellite feed that ran on Beaumont AM station (1450 KAYC thru the late 80's) that specialized in the music from post WWI through post WWII)?

.....Just ventin'....and as always, thanks for readin' this BS!!!.........

Probably more than they're pulling now.

Smells like a trial balloon to me. Somebody's got to do something with the facility once Stern moves on, whether Infinity keeps it or succeeds in dumping it.

I wish 'em well.

Very Very Cool :)

Maybe Paul will be on.

I know this is premature but, I hope it works out.

I am happy just thinking about it.

Can I say " I hate cheap channel for what they did to 790!!!!"

Thanks for your support

My mom used to listen to KOLE, after KQXY switched from "beautiful music". She also complained about the reception as I recall.

I think she also listened to KAYC and preferred the music that was played on that station better - it took her back to her youth.

However, I'm not sure what kind of demographics you would receive for this format in Houston (or anywhere else, for that matter). Radio management seems to be looking for the under 55 age group - that may or may not be who they get with an AM signal, and a weak one at that.

Re: A "slant" on the subject

I hope this goes well for KIKK 650. The problem won't be the signal as much as the hours of 1pm or 2pm until an 8pm sign off. Actually for 250watts, being on a low frequency 650 covers the city as well as 1590 with 5000 watts, maybe better since they don't have any other stations except WSM Nashville for interference. The limited hours has always been a problem for any station in Houston that can not operate fulltime, plus it is on AM. Weekend afternoons the show may do well for those that are lounging around outside and having a few drinks. The show will be have to be heavily promoted as few people bother to stop on the daytime stations, but the music may be enough to get some attention.

Personally I think Infinity may be testing some songs to see how they go over with those listening and incorporate them into Smooth Jazz The Wave 95.7. I would imagine that KIKK is one of the stations that Infinity has on the block as it does not fit into the type of station they want to retain. A low power daytime only station. By Winter the programs will only be on from 1pm to 2pm until 5pm. I imagine that Infinity will have KIKK sold by the time Stern is off the air, not that he is bring any ratings to Houston, but corporate has insisted that KIKK carry the Stern show in Houston until the end of the year or Sirius buys out Stern's contract. My guess is Sirius will let the show stay on terrestrial radio until January 1st, 2006.

If the program goes over well you could see Berlin and others form a company and buy 650, although the station is not practically upgradable in any way, what they have is what will be all KIKK will have for coverage. The station could be bought by a Religious broadcaster, donated or sold at a very low price to the University of Houston or one of the Universities-Colleges that do not have an outlet. It could go ethnic, such as Asian, although the daytime status is a hinderance to switching to Asian.

We should know what will become of KIKK 650 by sometime late Fall.

I think it's awesome that "SwingAid" was able to pull this off!
Never underestimate the power of one!

Re: A "slant" on the subject

My grandparents (85 & 95) are in bed when the sun sets and up with the rising sun which is precisely why I would make this an adult-standards with some old time radio shows thrown in. And then I WOULD LEAVE IT ALONE!
