101.5 FM testing???

Hi all,
Tonite I heard "oldies" music on 101.5 FM, and even caught an ID: "You're listening to 101.5 F.M, K-B-R-U, Strasberg-Denver" here in Commerce City. Problem is, it diden't sound as clean as KARS...If they are using their new 2000 foot transmitter site, they are gonna have to offer a lot more power to be taken seriously in the Denver area...Right now they're playing "Cherry Bomb" by John Mellencamp.

Here in Larkspur it sounds staticky but if I adjust my atenna the Tuner and the ST light comes on.

What oldies are they playing is it 50's-70's or is it 60's-70's?

Well up here in the Fort Collins/Northern COlorado area it comes in Loud and Clear and it sounds like some forum of Classic ROCK format.
I am thinking it is a mix between 70's and 80's classic rock.

Their signal is outright awful! Even though I get the stereo light, it sounds like complete crap!

I've heard too many dicso-era trax to really qualify their stunting as a "classic rocker". Perhaps they're working on some sort of oldies hybrid of a Jack station? Anyway, I'm glad somebody up north is getting a nice signal as here in the northeast corner of the metro area, it's not very impressive.

Heard it Saturday late afternoon driving north on I-76. Sounded pretty good
for a long time.

Remember they're also going to fire up a 20kw on-channel booster in Denver that will more than cover the metro with a solid signal.

The format thats on the air is for test/legal purposes only until the change of ownership takes place and a (more) permanent format is established. Stations cannot keep there license if they're dark for more than 12 months at a time..its on the air right now for a short period to protect the license.

They must be trying out all sorts of different formats, to see which ones they like? It is nice to see that they kept the call letters and trying to figure out what they want the station to play.

A very likely possibility...Perhaps they might go "Arrow" with their station?
An "Arrow 101.5" formatt would give them some manuverabilty between a classic rocker and an oldies outlet as do stations who use this moniker in other cities. I think the only drawback is that I believe like "Jack", "Arrow" is a "franchised" name and they would have to pay to use it, along with the Arrow slogan "Between a ROCK and a HARD place", ala Jack's "Playing what we want".
Please also see reply to Ed below about another possibility...

Hi Ed,
20 K would definatly help, especially if positioned centrally. Also, despite the stunting going on currantly, I read someplace that both the stations at 101.5 and 107.1 were now both under the same Hispanic media ownership. Would I be improperly profiling the buyers if I assumed the permanent formatts of these stations would be ones of interest to Latinos? Or are there similar media groups playing general-interest formatts on FM radio, such as the Laramie Hispanic Womens' Guild which in 1990 started the original MIX 105.5 up in Wyoming which is now JACK in Timnath?

Well that is quite interesting to know! I mean since KBRU 101.5 is playing everything from Rod Stewart to the Beatles! If they wanted KBRU to become a Spanish format then why the heck are they planing those kind of mix songs?

You know that is all quite interesting to know though.. I am just suprised that they kept the call Letters and didn;'t come up with some new call letters..
hummm.
Time well tell what both 101.5 and 107.1 well become.. should be an interesting to hear.

The new owners aren't radio people I thought, rather an investment firm with multiracial leadership. A diverse company if I recall. My guess is anything could happen.
______________

I believe Arrow is, or was, a servicemark. I'm not sure if CBS/Infiniy renewed that SM or not. Jammin' Oldies, for example, used to be a servicemark, but, after the format fizzled, the SM was allowed to expire since there was not much use in protect a brand no one wanted.

I wouldn't even call this stunting...just having something on the air as a neccessity.

Hispanic ownership doesn't always mean spanish radio. Look at Univision in Albuquerque (spanish + a classic rock station, a jazz station and a country station).

The format is temporary to satisfy the FCC to retain the license. The
new ownership hasn't taken over. Therefore there's been no effort to
change the call letters. Likely the frequency will be dark again until
the new ownership takes over and sets up shop.

Hi Kent,
Thanks for the input on the "branding". I think that was the term I wanted to use replying to "Arrow", but couldn't seem to think of it. I do know that in some cities I've visited, "Arrow" stations have performed as solidly as the "Fox" has done here in Denver. Out of curiousity I might do an internet search to see what stations are still using the "Arrow" moniker today and find out if they have a common ownership. So far, the tradition of this brand seems to sound the closest to what KBRU is trying to play on their stunting.

Thanks for the input, Ed. If indeed the new owners are not yet operating the station, then it is highly unlikely that what were hearing now would even be close to what they will probally air in the future. However, I do hope the stunting will continue until the new owner's planned formatt is ready.

Hi all again,
I was listening to KBRU on my way to work this evening (Th.), and heard the usual classic rock-oldies mix. When I left work (Early Fri. AM.), they had gone to dead air. (XMTR on, no programming) Don't know if the weather had something to do with this, or if their stunting has ended?

Re: 101.5 FM testing???Dead air tonite...

101.5 FM KBRU Strasburg, Denver, The Best Classic Rock... please turn on that booster you are working on! I am getting very weird multipath effects with their signal right now!
______________

Hi all,
I see KBRU is now airing station I.D.'s similar to what T90 stated above. Although I really like what they've been playing so far, I'm a little surprised they are trying to call themselves "classic rock". I think they are more like a "classic HITS" FM...Most classic rockers don't play stuff like "Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye or "Rapture" by Blondie (although some of Harry's tracks like "One Way or Another" are perfectly appropriate for C.R.). I've also heard some 70's Bee Gee songs, which are another "shade of gray", unlike their 60's releases. The variety KBRU is playing sounds very "Arrow" to me, but as that CBS-owned moniker is still probally copyrighted as someone pointed out, maybe KBRU could just call themselves "Classic 101.5 FM" if they really want to stick with this style which so far, has found my attention. Now take T90's suggestion and UP that signal!
