Cox Should Jack Its Four Florida Stations

P

Guest
This will be on the Miami, Orlando, Tampa & North Florida boards. Cox should flip its Jacksonville & Tampa stations to "Jack" clones, modeled after Cox's 98-9 WMMO in Orlando.

Here it is!

Miami: WFLC (Dropping the "Coast" AC Format)
Orlando: WMMO (Has been Floida's first adult hits station)
Tampa: WPOI (Dropping "Point" 80's Format)
Jacksonville: WMXQ (Also Dropping 80's)

WPOI and WMXQ are both strong billers, from what I understand. Actually, Cox is blocking JACK-FM (or a similar Variety Hits station) from going on in Houston (with 80s KHPT entrenched), much as what its 80s stations are doing in Tampa and Jacksonville. In Orlando, WMMO was the first Variety Hits station in Florida, if not the country. As for Miami, it could happen, but it depends on how WFLC bills and if it's worth the risk for Cox. Miami is a unique market, but if Variety Hits can be tried in drive-time in Montreal, I think it can be attempted in Miami.

But remember, Cox inherited WMMO's format when it acquired it, and it has yet to flip a single station to Variety Hits. Not every company is on the Variety Hits bandwagon yet (i.e. Cumulus), so don't presume it's a lock that Cox would want to get on board with the format.
______________

Hey, I love the JACK-FM format. But I'm saying that from Cox's point of view, the company might not be as inclined to shift stations that are billing well as some other companies are. I'm not saying what I would do or what "should" happen, but rather what is likely to happen given the actions to-date of Cox.
______________

LOL! The other day, listening to 101.5 in the car, my 10 year old daughter said, "why do they always call it NEW? It isn't NEW! That's dumb." From a 10 year old.

The only station that beats longevity of the word "new" is Magic 94.9...and will someone please direct me to the website or penny saver that has the ballots where I can vote on the best station to listen to at work?....since they constantly tout they are that station...

What's ironic is... I've spent some time in Atlanta recently and Cox's WSB-FM (B-98.5) is also "Voted #1 AGAIN for listening at work." Ha ha ha ha... Not sure on where to vote for them either. No surprise... The station sounds EXACTLY like Magic... I'm sorry, I mean the new Magic 94-9!!!!!

First, WMMO is NOT a Jack-like station. It can best be
described as Rock AC or Soft Rock (even though some
of its playlist is uptempo). It plays adult rock, from
Chicago to Fleetwood Mac to Clapton to The Beatles.

Jack is more rock-oriented, more contemporary and
includes a few urban hits that were big on MTV like
"Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer. Also, there are no
DJs. The same voice is used for recorded liners all
day, usually with a bit of attitude.

If you have AOL, you can hear WCBS-FM in NYC on its
Radio AOL feature. If you don't, www.charliefm.com, the
Jack-like station in Portland OR, audio-streams. Or
contrast the playlists at www.yes.net

As for Cox, it really was top-heavy with classic rock/
classic hits/80s in the Tampa Bay area with FOUR stations
fitting that description for a time. But with WTBT
switching to Country, Cox may hang on to what it has.

Actually I'm surprised Infinity hasn't switched WRBQ
by now. If they blew up oldies stations in NYC, Chicago
and Baltimore, why not WRBQ? I don't think its a wise
move since the only Jack station in a top 100 market in
the entire country is The Peak in Phoenix, which just
made #8 in the recent Arbitrend. That's it. No
other Jack station is in the top 10, in any top 100
market. (Of course, its still early and some Jack
stations may rise over the summer. But the proof isn't
there yet.)

Consider KBPA in Austin, TX (market #43, according to R&R). The rules against posting ratings on here are clear, but KBPA is strong both 12+ (which doesn't matter) and P25-54 (which very much matters).

Dallas' KJKK has performed great 25-54 as well, from what I understand. Do you think if KJKK was struggling in the money demo(s) that Infinity would be rolling out JACK-FM in the largest markets in the U.S.?

With that said, I still believe that Tampa is an ill-suited market for a Variety Hits station due to the formats that are in place here. But clearly anything is possible after what happened to WCBS-FM.
______________

I would agree that anything is possible, but I think Infinity will keep their hands off Q105104.7 etc....for now.

My feeling is they will still roll out en masse the Q105 moniker for one nostalgic push, as its coming up on two decades since their hey day. Once that run is over, "Jack" will have been established elsewhere, and Infinity will be able to get a better read on how the format would do here.

Re: Cox Insider

Paul Ciliano, the former Cox Tampa Operations Manager is now the Program Director for WSB-FM, thats why B98 and Magic sound alike.

Actually, B98.5 sounded like Magic 94-9 long before Paul went to Atlanta. Think waaay back when Magic was Warm, and Tom Palaveda left here to program WSB-FM, they were very similar sounding radio stations... and, voted #1 to listen to while you're at work, too! Holy Crap! How do they do it?

Don't forget Jack FMs in San Diego and Indianapolis are in the top ten, though I'm not sure if Indy's trends is under Jack or the previous oldies format.

Another example is Bob in Oklahoma City (market #53). They are in the top 5.

Don't kid yourself about Bob-FM OKC. They are actually just a 300 songs in a row classic hits station with a good morning show from the incumbent classic rocker. (whos running Bob and Tom)
______________

Cox is pretty cookie-cutter in their approach. I believe that even their playlists are piped-in from the corporate guys. (very well-researched though)
______________
