Oldies vs Country in NTC

Does New York City losing its oldies station mean there's even less chance of someone picking up the country format there? Even though CBS-FM reached 'older' demos, it was still proven to get decent overall ratings, plus there's a big hype about this change right now, so if someone were looking to change formats in the market, would they be more likely to switch to oldies, not country? In most other markets country is seen as viable for the younger adult female audience, but NYC can't get past stereotypes discussed here before, so it seems country is even "more doomed" there now.

Re: Oldies vs Country in

Those Yanks just don't understand country music.

Guess that was a joke, but country radio is doing pretty well elsewhere in the northeast, Philadelphia, Boston, Portland, Providence, Allentown, Albany, etc.
Just NYC where it doesn't find a home.

Re: Oldies vs Country in

I disagree. Country has become hotter and with the CMA's coming to NYC, there will be much said for the format, it's new talent and young artists. I feel that 95.5fm (WPLJ) is a prime candidate for the country format, especially since ABC radio has quite a few country outlets and syndicated programming with "Best Country".

You'll need to fill me in on what businesses in NYC. blare country music??
Sounds like quite the rarity to me.
In addition I can assure you that NO AM country radio signal is receivable in New York or it's suburbs.
______________

What about WRWD 1370 from Ellenville, the new simulcast of the FM Highland/Poughkeepsie country station? Also I think WGBB on Long Island still has a couple hours each week, too.

Re: Oldies vs Country in

Are you sure it was a country station?
There are no rimshot stations that penetrate the city or the suburbs.
Was it at night or during the day?
You might have gotten a DX from some other state.
There is absolutely no audable country music station in the NYC. metro on AM or FM on a regular basis.
______________

WGBB is mostly The Chinese Radio Network with some local programming of Carribean music/spanish programming, mostly ethnic and some religious programming from time to time. No country program is broadcast on that station.

WRWD cannot be heard in the city and only broadcasts during the day thus preventing it's signal to travel.
Local AM radio doesn't come in well in the city because of the building let alone an AM station 80 miles north.
______________

I posted this on the Long Island board, and the response was WGBB has an hour long country show 3 nights a week at 11pm, their program schedule on line is a year old.
