What do Al and Rush share? (Madison)

CONKLIN: What do Al and Rush share?
00:00 am 6/01/05

Al Franken got his Madison report card. And the grades are excellent.

The latest quarterly Arbitron ratings came out late last week for the 12-week-period starting in January. Air America's local affiliate, "The MIC 92.1," posted the biggest overall audience ratings increase.

"Those wondering if it was going to have any legs post-fall elections when we had Bruce Springsteen, Michael Moore and John Kerry in town, got their answer," boasts Mike Ferris, Clear Channel Madison's FM operations manager. "This book proves that it does and it's increasing, not maintaining. This is the story of this book - we've beat the sophomore jinx." (Air America launched locally Sept. 7, 2004.)

Proving Madison is home to a diversity of opinions, Franken's tally put him neck-and-neck with Rush Limbaugh.

Ferris says his office sent the ratings to Franken. "It's your report card, you want to show it to Mom and Dad," he attests. "I'm sure Al is thrilled with that. I'm not even sure Rush cares. Franken's got a soft spot in his heart for Madison."

Footnote: Z-104 (WZEE-FM) is the No. 1 rated station overall among all listeners.

Okay, spin it. ;)

No spin here. For the moment, its good news, but we got a LONG way to go in the competition. I hope CC will see it as a good move for the stations they decide to flip and that the experiment continues to have some merit.

Its encouraging news for AAR and Al Franken i'm sure. For me its good news. However, (reality sets in) its in Wisconsin (which doesn't take away from the victory) but I have to feel good that Al can do well in a state that is a swing state or leans blue (maybe we can do something like this in Ohio - another swing state). However, there is still lots of work to do and lots of markets to enter.

Ideally, the day i relax and say all is well for Liberal Radio will be when friends I know down in the area where I grew up in Louisiana hear AAR for the first time and call me up angrily about it. :) I won't hold my breath on that Louisiana station for the moment.

I would have thought that New Orleans was doable. Always thought of it as the San Fransisco of the south!

If that can happen in Madison, Schultz should be able to beat slightly less venerable Sean Hannity in less liberal markets.

Frankly, Portland is san francisco north, and Madison is Frisco east. There were more votes for Fidel Castro than John Kerry last November.<P ID="signature">______________

Not true. Wow, when will conservatives begin telling the truth? I know you are joking but conservatives on this site don't let us get away with it. Neither can you. God Bless!

I dont think that was a joke....just another backhanded attack

I am getting a little sick of all these conservative apologists. If it isn't that the state is Liberal, than it is that the city is liberal, or that the county is liberal, or that liberals dance funny jigs at the courthouse or have food co-op or something or other that justifies whatever doesn't match up with the world-view they so dearly cherish....

I am getting a little sick of posts in this forum that are nothing more than political attacks and devoid of any content related to the radio business.

Then quit writing them!

If you have an example of one I've written perhaps you'll have a point, but I won't hold my breath waiting.

Nice try, but no cookie for you. That post was about this forum, not politics.
