All-Nighter of the Week

In a remark in another thread earlier this week, I suggested that perhaps we start a thread called "All Nighter of the Week" as a response to AM stations operating with day power during hours of darkness. When they're supposed to be operating at reduced power or not at all. I meant the remark as a joke. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought that it couid be a legitimate topic. If you hear a station that you think is operating outside the terms of its license. post it. At minimum, it gives everyone else here a "heads up" to go after a station they've never before heard.

I'll start with a case in point that we've talked about before. WFDL in Waupun, WI. A 1kw daytimer that's been widely heard at night for at least the last month or so. I heard them again last night a little before midnight CDT. Rather weak with fading, but I did catch a positive ID.

So what do you guys think of the idea. If you hear something new and/or out of the ordinary. Daytimers/day power at night, and/or STA stuff. The old rules seem to be sporadically enforced, if not completely ignored. As for the "...of the week". I don't envision that this be a hard and fast rule. Just post something anytime if you hear something. This gives us a place for that.

Have fun!

Sure, sounds great! I nominate WDLR, Delaware, Ohio, which has been widely and consistently heard on 1550 for years (may have changed since the translator).

I've heard this one before. The fact that 1550 is pretty empty around here (day and night) helps. Maybe we should also include an "All Nighters' Hall of Fame

I like this new thread!

I vote for WWBA 820am Largo/Tampa Florida that generally stays on daytime power of 50,000 watts at night with boring sports talk, blocking reception of WBAP Dallas, instead of their licensed 1000 watts at night.

My 2nd place vote is for KYND 1520 am Cypress/Houston TX with their recorded sales pitch all night long at 25,000 watts instead of their licensed 0 watts! Blocks reception of the weak KOKC here down south.

That is true as I've heard WWBA in Northern Illinois sometimes competing with nearby WCPT.

My favorite line on there is "certain FCC restrictions may apply." Apparently, the ones stipulating sign-on/off times for a daytimer are no longer applicable.

Poster "SomeRadioGuy" noted that fellow Houston area AM daytimer 1090 KULF was heard a few days ago by another DXer in eastern Arkansas. May want to keep an ear out for it. I tried to pull it in from here in ETX, but a noticeably diminished KAAY was all that I received.

I don't know how or why, but last night here in the Northern half of New Jersey, I heard 1360 WNJC from near Philadelphia in South Jersey, about 60 miles away, even though both their 5000-watt daytime and 800-watt nighttime signals are supposed to be sharply directional to the South with a deep null in my direction (protecting WDRC in Connecticut).

Last night at 11:45 pm CDT heard WTIS (Tampa, FL) on 1110 with good signal and over KFAB with Spanish language programming. Pretty sure they were running on their 50 kw daytime rig.

Also got a report that KGA 1510 was running on their day power last night. Might be worth checking it out tonight.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to check out both of them.

Thanks for the heads up. I just checked 1110 and I'm getting a fairly good KFAB. Even when nulled there's nothing specific that I can ID.

Hi, I'm new to Radio Discussions.

Back in April, I heard WJML-MI on 1110 around midnight. Definitely not 10 w., and WELD-WV on 690 around 2130. Very strong, clearly not 14 w. I'm in Mashpee, MA, on Cape Cod.

Welcome to the board, Vince. You're among friends, and always welcome here. Keep those DX posts coming!

I sometimes think we're approaching a point where if you hang out on any given AM channel at night, sooner or later you'll encounter a station that's running at somwthing other than authorized power or pattern. I perssonally haven't noticed anything unusual on 1110 of late, but 690 is a different story. A few weeks ago, WQNO from New Orleans spent a handful of nights apparently not powering down. What presumably was the 9100 watt non-directional day pattern put in a fairly solid signal here in the Chicago area. I haven't heard them lately, so they now seem to have gotten back into compliance at 2100 watts directional east-west.

Historically, as WTIX, the New Orleans 690 was 10kw day, 5kw nights directional, with a small lobe in this direction, so i (and others here) would hear it from time to time. WTIX was a legendary top-40 station in the 60s and 70s.

Vinny is my buddy, from as far back as either the 3rd grade or 5th grade. One girl outside our schoolyard said he looked like Paul Anka. So Vinny suggested, 'So, scream'. And the girls did.

Please treat Vince with the proper disrespect.

When I said to Vince in my welcoming remarks. "You're among friends". I guess I was correct. But not to worry, Steve, I can disrespect people with the best of 'em!
