Joe Mathieu Leaving WBZ Radio Friday April 28

WBZ Radio Morning anchor, Joe Mathieu is leaving WBZ Radio Friday, April 28.

Wonder if he is getting off a sinking ship before Entercom takes over and sends WBZ Radio into the gutter.

As the bumper sticker say, " Entercom Happens ! "

Wow maybe that's a surprise maybe not? I generally hear him do his free-form thing with BradleyJ just before the 5am 'cast. I didn't hear it this am but I hadn't noticed any hints the last few times I caught it.

Contract issues? He started in May of 2011, 6 years ( two 3 year contracts?)

I'm sure there are lots of people who would love to fill that chair that are on the beach or under-employed in this market.

Joe was just on with BradleyJ and didn't offer any reason as to why the departure. BradleyJ is off the remainder of the week so this was their last signoff together. Mathieu will work through till Fri. He did not speak of any future plans other than taking time off.

My guess is he was looking for some future years on a deal and they didn't offer any with the transitioning management.

Wonder if Bradley J. can be far behind. Takes more time off than anyone before him. Sometimes interesting; sometimes gets stuck reliving his music days which is only marginally interesting.

Who's gonna take over his morning slot? Deb Lawlor or Kristen Eck? Or maybe Kevin Brennan.

No inside track here, just conjecture: Rod Fritz, Ben Parker, Kendall Buehl, all of WBZ; Jay Corwin, late of morning news on 'RKO ("an Entercom station").

I'm also hoping Gary LaPierre gets to do a whole week or so of fill-in.

I like Ms Eck, but she is not a CBS Employee, and I doubt at this point they are going to bring on new talent.

If you are going to poach talent from Radiant Media's traffic service there are people who are a better fit IMHO ( Lori Grande, Nichole Davis, grab Rob Hackala out of WATD's morning chair) Kristen, with 20 years in that glorified egg beater they call a Helicopter is much more valuable as a traffic reporter.

I believe Lori Grande is doing morning news on 'RKO, but 'RKO gets its news/traffic/weather from Total Traffic Network, do they not? And both Ms Davis and Mr Hackala (sp?) are traffic reporters, not necessarily news anchors.

Jay Corwin of TTN was doing news during the WRKO-Boston.com Morning Show until the time 'BZ dropped TTN. At that point, TTN replaced Jay with Lori Grande - who, ironically, was doing news on weekends on WBZ! - and is now heard doing morning news on 'RKO. The reason I mentioned Jay is because I no longer hear him on 'RKO and figured he might be available.

But if 'BZ wants to promote from within, then Rod Fritz, Ben Parker, or Kendall Buehl would do nicely. Of course, Joe Matthieu came literally from out of the sky (satellite radio) to 'BZ, so his replacement can come from anywhere.

And this all assumes 'BZ still wants a male-female anchor team in AM drive.

I know for a fact that Ms Davis can read news, and also goes double if not more for Rob Hackala who has been WATD's morning guy including news for as long as I can remember... that is where he met his wife, Laurie Kirby who was WATD's News Director before going to WBZ.

I'd like to see Jeff Brown and Deb Lawlor mornings; Mary Blake and Rod Fritz middays; Laurie Kirby and Kim Tunnicliffe afternoons.

I knew none of this, but I went to the WATD web site and learned that Aaron Katersky, like Laurie Kirby, was also News director there. These are two of my favorite news people; always very professional yet pleasant

Say, any chance Aaron K could return to Boston and take Joe's place?

Charlie Sherman started doing Saturday mornings, just a couple of weeks ago—maybe they are testing him for morning drive?

Especially if you try to take his parking spot!!!! (Long, but interesting story.....!!;))

If you have time to type it, we have time to read it. Is it a Ted Knight type story?

Since WBIN shut down it's on air news ( NH1 is on life support ) in preparation of going dark as Binnie is turning that license in as part of the spectrum auction, Charlie needs a job. Sorry Charlie but you are not major market TV talent, but he may be passable on radio with some coaching.

I'm not sure truthfully why Joe Mathieu is leaving, I'm not thrilled with the Entercom- CBS merger and how it will impact the CBS news stations, including WBZ, if at all
Having said that, the morning drive is
extremely important, and I hope WBZ will do what they have done and hire anchors from the talent pool of WCBS, and, or larger markets.
WBZ doesn't need more mediocre, or insipid talent
