Markets where at least one of the big 4 network stations is in a different city

So that would be something like Bristol-Kingsport-Johnson City:

WCYB 5 NBC in Bristol
WJHL 11 CBS Johnson City
WEMT 39 FOX Johnson City
WKPT 19 ABC Kingsport

You almost get that in Hartford/New Haven:

ABC is licensed to New Haven
CBS and FOX are licensed to Hartford
NBC is licensed to New Britain

(CW is licensed to Waterbury and ION is licensed to New London.)

P.S. FOX in the Tri-Cities market is licensed to Greenville, TN, if I'm not mistaken. Therefore, all four are different COLs.

The Paducah/Cape Girardeau market:

WPSD-TV 6 (NBC) Paducah
KFVS-TV 12 (CBS) Cape Girardeau
KBSI-TV 23 (Fox) also Cape
and the ABC channel in Harrisburg, IL. I lived too far south in that market for Harrisburg, so we watched ABC on WBBJ-TV 7 out of Jackson, TN.

WYFF/4 Greenville, SC (NBC)
WSPA/7 Spartanburg, SC (CBS)
WLOS/13 Asheville, NC (ABC)
WHNS/21 Asheville, NC (Fox)

WFMY/2 Greensboro, NC (CBS)
WGHP/8 High Point, NC (Fox)
WXII/12 Winston-Salem, NC (NBC)
WXLV/45 Winston-Salem, NC (ABC)

WDBJ/7 Roanoke, VA (CBS)
WSLS/10 Roanoke, VA (NBC)
WSET/13 Lynchburg, VA (ABC)
WJPR/21 Lynchburg, VA (Fox)
WFXR/27 Roanoke, VA (satellite of WJPR)

Minneapolis, MN
KSTP ABC 5 is licensed to St Paul, MN whereas the others (WCCO CBS 4, KMSP FOX 9, KARE NBC 11) are licensed to Minneapolis. KSTP is unique as 1/2 the building is on the Minneapolis side, 1/2 is on St Paul and their original tower has one leg in Mpls, 1 in St Paul and one on the line

Duluth, MN
KBJR NBC 6 is licensed to Superior, WI but everything (studio, tower) is in Duluth.
WDIO ABC 10, KQDS FOX 21 and KDLH CBS 3 are all licensed to Duluth

Wausau, WI
WSAU CBS 7 and WAOW ABC 9 are licensed to Wausau
WJFW NBC 12 is licensed to Rhinelander (there is a translator in Wausau)
WFXS FOX 55 licensed to Wittenberg

Rochester, MN
KTTC NBC 10 and KXLT FOX 47 licensed to Rochester
KIMT CBS 3 licensed to Mason City, IA
KAAL ABC 6 licensed to Austin, MN

Fargo, ND
WDAY ABC 6, KVLY NBC 11, KVRR FOX 15 licensed to Fargo
KXJB CBS 4 licensed to Valley City

Ft Myers, FL
WINK CBS 11 and WBBH NBC 22 licensed to FT Myers
WZVN ABC 26 licensed to Naples
WFTX FOX 36 licensed to Cape Coral

Then you have markets that are 2 combined like LaCrosse & Eau Claire, WI
If we do LaCrosse you have WKBT CBS 8, WXOW ABC 19, and WLAX FOX 25 all in LaCrosse. Technically they get WEAU NBC 13 from Eau Claire but its far away so there is a translator of KTTC 10 Rochester, MN in LaCrosse

Eau Claire would be WEAU NBC 13, WQOW ABC 18 in Eau Claire
WKBT CBS 8 LaCrosse
WUEX FOX 48 Chippewa Falls

Isn't that just an example of the lack of metropolitan consolidation in certain Metropolitan Statistical Areas?

Santa Rosa/Somona County: KRCB 22 (PBS), KEMO 50 (Azteca)
San Mateo: KCSM 60 (PBS)

Rochester, MN
KTTC NBC 10 and KXLT FOX 47 licensed to Rochester
KIMT CBS 3 licensed to Mason City, IA
KAAL ABC 6 licensed to Austin, MN

The Rochester, MN-Mason City, IA-Austin, MN DMA is a quintessential example of the type of market I think gregg75 was asking about. As the crow flies, Mason City is about 35 miles southwest of Austin and Austin is about 35 miles southwest of Rochester. In terms of news, the CBS station (KIMT) has a studio in Mason City and best covers the southern portion of the market, the ABC station (KAAL) has studios in Austin and Rochester but best covers the middle portion of the market, and the NBC and Fox stations (KTTC and KXLT) have studios in Rochester and Austin but best cover the northern portion of the market. Essentially this market was squeezed together by combining three cities that each could only sustain one TV station back when there was only the "big three."

I'd say that a majority of DMAs that are 50+ are hyphenated. But some markets appear more "thrown together" than others. Rochester-Mason City-Austin above is one. Cape Girardeau-Paducah-Harrisbur is another. Then there is the mess more easily described as "Greater Nebraska:" Lincoln-Grand Island-Kearney-Hastings. Two separate ABC affiliates, one in Lincoln (a relatively recent move-in in the last 15 years or so) and the other in Hastings. OK...here goes, and mind you, I've never lived in Nebraska, but grew up in Iowa so accuracy might not be the best:

CBS: KOLN 10 Lincoln, with satellite KGIN 11 Grand Island
NBC: KHAS 5 Hastings. As far as I know, KHAS doesn't have a translator or satellite in Lincoln
ABC: KHGI 13 Kearney, with satellite KWNB 6 Hayes Center
Fox: KFXL 51 Lincoln. Fox used to be seen on KTVG 17 Grand Island, but that station supposedly went dark in 2010. KSNB 4 Superior used to be a satellite of KTVG, providing Fox to the Lincoln area, but its choice to return to RF channel 4 upon the DTV conversion apparently doomed it.

ABC used to be on four stations in Nebraska, billed as NTV. Today NTV is just KHGI and KWNB, but once upon a time it included channel 8 at Albion, a small town 60 miles NW of Grand Island which became the move-in KLKN Lincoln and is now separately owned, and KSNB 4 Superior which was changed from ABC to Fox in the 90s.

If it weren't for KOLN-KGIN, 10/11, Lincoln would likely have been part of the Omaha market. If I remember the story right, KOLN was very concerned that it would indeed get sucked into the Omaha market, only about 50 miles away. KOLN started out life on channel 12, then donated that station to the University of nebraska after KOLN received a CP to move to 10.

So, Lincoln has hometown CBS, ABC and recently FOX. NBC over the air is from KMTV 3 Omaha, and in addition FOX covers Lincoln quite well with KPTM 42 Omaha, with a fairly tall tower 20 miles SW of Omaha, which I believe is the only big 4 affiliate that city grades both Omaha and Lincoln.

What a monstrosity!

Montgomery, AL:

WAKA-8 (CBS, Selma)

All others are licensed to Montgomery

WSFA-12 (NBC)
WCOV-20 (Fox, formerly CBS before WAKA became a Montgomery rimshot in '86)
WNCF-32 (ABC)

Birmingham

Licensed to Birmingham:

WBRC-6 (Fox, formerly ABC until '96)
WVTM-13 (NBC)
WIAT-42 (CBS)
WBMA-LD 58 (ABC). The reality of the situation is that Birmingham's OTA ABC comes from WCFT-33 in Tuscaloosa and WJSU-40 in Anniston.

Mississippi's Golden Triangle:

WCBI-4 (CBS, Columbus)
WTVA-9 (NBC on 9.1, ABC on 9.2; Tupelo)
WLOV-27 (Fox, West Point)
...and the Mississippi Public Broadcasting affiliates for the market are licensed to Mississippi State (Starkville, Channel 2) and Booneville (Channel 12).

Cincinnati:

WLWT-5, WCPO-9, and WKRC-12 (NBC, ABC and CBS, respectively) are licensed to the Queen City, while Fox affiliate WXIX-19 is licensed to Newport, KY, just across the Ohio River.

Wichita:

KSNW-3 (NBC), KAKE-10 (ABC) and KSAS-24 (Fox) are licensed to Wichita, while KWCH-12 (CBS) is licensed to Hutchinson, although it's evident that their call sign pays homage to the principal city in the market.

correct

station shut down for a while, Fox is on subchannel of ABC in Grand Island. Gray (owner of KOLN/KGIN) got a "failing station" waiver to purchase it and is now the My affiliate (which is also on subchannel of KOLN/KGIN)

To correct a previous post: NBC of Omaha is WOWT-TV channel 6. KMTV-TV channel 3 is their CBS affiliate.

Another market which has a base with a different city is Providence/New Bedford (RI/MA). ABC and CW are licensed to New Bedford, MA. NBC, CBS and FOX are licensed to Providence, RI (their ION affiliate, WPXQ-TV channel 69, is licensed to Block Island, RI).

KCPQ 13 (Q13 Fox) in the Seattle-Tacoma area was licensed to Tacoma, and not Seattle like the other big 3 (KOMO, KING, KIRO).

Three others came to mind:

Tampa Bay:

Tampa: WFLA (NBC-8), WTVT (Fox-13), WFTS (ABC-28)
St. Petersburg: WTSP (CBS-10)

Orlando:

Daytona Beach: WESH (NBC-2)
Orlando: WKMG (CBS-6), WFTV (ABC-9), WOFL (Fox-35)

West Palm Beach:

West Palm Beach: WPTV (NBC-5), WPEC (CBS-12), WFLX (Fox-29)
Tequesta: WPBF (ABC-25)

I would say so. In the case of the Paducah/Cape Girardeau/Harrisburg market, it is also a case of being too far away from such SMSAs. The nearest metropolitan areas from there (in every direction) are Memphis, St. Louis, Evansville, Little Rock, and Nashville. And as I mentioned earlier, not everyone in that market gets ABC from Harrisburg. We got ABC from Jackson, TN, while those in the western fringes of that "market" probably got theirs from KAIT in Jonesboro, AR.

More examples:

Shreveport-Texarkana

Shreveport: KTBS (ABC-3), KSLA (CBS-12), KMSS (Fox-33)
Texarkana: KTAL (NBC-6)

Monroe, LA

Monroe: KNOE (CBS-8)
El Dorado, AR: KTVE (NBC-10)
Columbia, LA: KAQY (ABC-11)
West Monroe, LA: KARD (Fox-14)
